Good afternoon, I am Gordon, a Poet, and starting from cold I thought, to reassure myself as much as anything; to remind myself what I'm about and what I'm doing, a word or two about poetry may be worthwhile to break the ice.
Truly we've all been aware of poetry from a very early age. Nursery rhymes likely being our first experience of the rhythm and jangle. Then song, the hymn, prayers, through pop songs, marching, advertising's jingle angle and so on. Poetry is everywhere part of everyday life. And yet somehow it's managed to become a minority pursuit. It's been put through the mangle of intellectual analysis and the psychiatrist's couch beckons. Rules have been established to unpick the knitting of the verbal tangle.
Somehow poetry's been spoilt, seen as irrelevant and as the crank would have it, for the few not the many. It both is and isn't. I find it powerful fun which needs a chance, deserving to escape the drooling, highfalutin fooling.
